Join us for the launch of Dr. Karen Messing’s groundbreaking new book, Bent out of Shape: Shame, Solidarity, and Women’s Bodies at Work (Between the Lines, 2021).

We are celebrating the launch with a conversation between Dr. Messing, Mary Shaw (UFCW), and Dr. Pat Armstrong, moderated by Dr. Jane McArthur.

In Bent out of Shape, Dr. Messing talks with women who work at grocery store checkouts, sew clothes, clean toilets, drive forklifts, care for children, serve food, run labs, and more. What she finds is a workforce in harm’s way, experiencing disproportionate and shocking levels of injury and strain, largely because their workplaces are still designed for men. The tasks women do, and their health impacts, are rarely thoroughly considered by employers.

Though these conditions and the adverse health impacts are no fault of their own, many women live with intense shame. But Dr. Messing, drawing on years of research and advocacy, invites us to boldly direct attention to women’s bodies, champion solidarity, stamp out shame, and transform the workplace.
