Job Opportunity: Design and Production Manager

Between the Lines is looking for a Design and Production Manager

You have a passion for progressive politics and are excited about the opportunity to work with activist authors and readers. You have experience working collaboratively. You are also self-motivated and relish the opportunity to manage your own labour in a workplace without bosses.

You will:

  • manage the design and production process for all new BTL titles
  • complete interior design and layout of most new BTL books
  • direct and manage freelance illustrators and book designers
  • design print and online materials for advertisements, social media content, sales sheets, flyers, posters, catalogues, and other marketing materials, as determined by the collective
  • proofread all books and ebooks and ensure BTL’s style guide and quality standards are enforced
  • participate in weekly staff meetings and work with other BTL staff on collective goals
  • participate in BTL editorial committee meetings, held in the evening, every six weeks
  • when required, attend book launches, conferences, professional development sessions, and publishing industry events

You will need:

  • enthusiasm about creating books that challenge mainstream culture and politics and promote social justice
  • excellent organization and planning skills and an ability to prioritize competing tasks and to meet deadlines
  • excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • strong critical thinking and analytical skills
  • meticulous attention to detail and extensive knowledge of printing and design standards
  • an ability to work collaboratively in a collective work environment
  • a post-secondary degree or relevant work experience
  • proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite including InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop
  • ebook creation skills, illustration skills, and knowledge of other layout and design software an asset
