Launched on Oct 1st, 2015 at the Racial Justice Summit in Madison, WI, Deep Diversity has been endorsed by a diverse group of people that including bias researcher Mahzarin Banaji at Harvard, social activist Rinku Sen from Race Forward in NY, neuropsycholigist Rick Hanson as well as leaders from the business community. The book is intimately tied to the author’s personal and professional story. In Shakil Choudhury’s own words: “It’s a culmination of 20 years teaching thousands of people across 4 continents, one emotional burnout in my early 30s and a childhood in small town Canada pretending I was white.” The style could loosely be described as “Gladwell meets racial justice” — personal narrative holds together complex theory so it’s accessible to a wide spectrum of readers. Using a compassionate but challenging approach, this book helps identify the racial blind spots we all possess and offers practical solutions about how to break the “prejudice-habits” we’ve learned in order to tackle systemic discrimination.
