About the role
We’re seeking a politically minded publishing intern to assist staff in each department at our nonfiction press, including: sales, distribution, and marketing; editorial, rights, and permissions; publicity and promotions; and production and design.
Normally we work out of an open-plan office space in a restored heritage building in Toronto. Right now we’re working remotely due to COVID-19; the internship will be fully remote and we welcome applications from anywhere in Canada. Our main business hours are 9:30am–5:30pm Monday through Thursday, with flexible start and end times.
This paid full-time position is typically 28 hours per week for 12 weeks (336 hours total). We are open to part-time arrangements for the right candidate. The intern will receive $6,300 over the span of the internship.

- Looking to start a career in the independent publishing industry;
- Interested in working collaboratively in a non-hierarchical collective structure;
- Willing to participate in all aspects of the day-to-day operation of a press.
This internship will provide the successful candidate with a broad range of publishing industry experience and allows for self-directed work based on the candidate’s preferences, strengths, and areas of interest. Tasks will be discussed and assigned in a collaborative process with all staff members to ensure that the internship is tailored to create the most effective learning experience possible.
You may be asked to assist with the following tasks in each of our four departments:
Sales, distribution, and marketing
- compiling, auditing, and updating book metadata
- conducting market research and comparative title research
- building sales reports
- writing and editing catalogue and website copy
Editorial, rights, and permissions
- reviewing submissions
- writing reports on manuscripts for the editorial committee
- researching rights sales opportunities
Publicity and promotions
- planning and hosting virtual author events
- conducting media research and outreach
- mailing out and tracking review and awards submissions
- coordinating social media and Mailchimp campaigns
- pitching and writing blog posts and reading lists
Production and design
- designing images for social media
- auditing and editing epubs
- organizing and/or digitizing historical documents from archives dating back to the 1970s
- Ingenuity, initiative, and enthusiasm;
- Excellent organization and planning skills;
- The ability to juggle tasks and work to deadlines;
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
- Strong critical thinking and analytical skills.
